What Is a Direct Cremation?

A direct cremation is a cremation that takes place without a formal funeral ceremony or family attendance at the crematorium. Your loved one is brought into our care, the required paperwork and permits are arranged, a coffin is provided and the cremation takes place privately.

For many families, it is a simpler and more affordable way to arrange a cremation while allowing them to remember their loved one in their own way and in their own time.

Common Questions About Direct Cremations in Perth

Can the family attend a direct cremation?

Unfortunately not. A direct cremation takes place privately without family or friends attending the crematorium. If an attended funeral service is preferred, there is the intimate cremation or funeral service options which can allow families to say their final goodbyes. The alternative is to arrange a viewing at the care facility prior to our funeral home bringing your loved one into our care.

Are there any eco-friendly direct cremation options available in Perth?

Yes. Families looking for a more eco-conscious direct cremation can choose between a simple wooden cremation coffin or a Daisybox coffin made from recycled corrugated cardboard. Direct cremations also keep the overall arrangement simpler, with no embalming, no formal funeral service, and fewer additional products such as printed service booklets, large floral arrangements or multiple funeral vehicles.

This can make direct cremation a more environmentally conscious option for families who want to keep things simple and practical.

What happens after the direct cremation is complete?

Once the cremation has taken place, the ashes are usually ready for collection from the cemetery after two days, but potentially more if ashes are being transferred to another cemetery. The applicant or authorised person will also require photo identification to collect the ashes.

After receiving the ashes, there is no requirement to do anything further. You may choose to keep them, scatter them somewhere meaningful, place them in an urn, or arrange a memorial or celebration of life at a later date. What happens next is entirely up to you and your family.

We will usually submit the death registration on the day of cremation, provided the applicant has reviewed the death registration summary, advised us of any amendments, and confirmed the information is correct.

It can take around two weeks for the death registration to be completed and for an official death certificate to become available.

If we are ordering the certificate for you, we will contact you once it is ready and post it to your nominated address. If you would prefer to order the death certificate yourself, you can do so through the WA Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
